WETM-IAC, New Horizons III Report & Au Pair of the Year

Work Experience Travel Market & IAPA Annual Conference 2013 Recap

The Work Experience Travel Market & IAPA Annual Conference bring together the world’s top work & volunteer abroad, au pair and gap-year industry professionals to meet, share and collaborate. This industry conference hosted by WYSE Travel Confederation (The World Youth Student & Educational Travel Confederation) and IAPA (The International Au Pair Association) combines b2b meetings with further education, discussions and plenty of opportunities to network with partners and colleagues from around the world.

Last month in Rome, Italy, the conference also saw the launch of the WYSE Travel Confederation’s New Horizons III Report, detailing important trends in the youth travel industry. This report revealed who is going, where and for how long, how young people are spending their time and money abroad as well as where they sleep and how they communicate while away from home. The New Horizon’s III Report discloses the motivation, strengths and trajectory of the fast-growing youth travel industry as well as a few other surprising statistics.

Why are young people traveling? The report clearly outlined the top 3 reasons being:

  1. Holiday
  2. Language Learning
  3. Work Experience

The #1 destination for international Work Experience programs proved to be North America and of those surveyed, more than 60% of participants were female.

Regarding budget, the largest expense for Work Experience abroad programs was disclosed as accommodation followed by food & drinks then program costs and activities; and despite easy access to technology these days there has been an overall increase in communication spending.

While visas applications can sometimes be confusing and take time to process it’s good to know that young travelers are not intimidated by this, as demonstrated in the report.

It’s obvious that young adults see the value in going abroad and appear to have well-defined motivation for their travels and understand the benefits.

The presentation of the New Horizons III report by David Chapman and subsequent panel discussion left us with 2 questions to ponder:

International Au Pair Association – Au Pair of the Year

One such example of gap year success, is Femke, a German au pair who spent a year with a host family in New Zealand. Femke was awarded “Au Pair of the Year” by IAPA at WETM-IAC in Rome. After her acceptance speech, the talented girl sang a beautiful song dedicated to New Zealand and her host family, proving that a year abroad can be life-changing, eye-opening and inspiring. Congratulations, Femke!

If you are thinking about becoming an au pair in Europe, check out our Au Pair FAQ or find out more about work experience programs in Canada here.

In the Beginning…

The very first business trip that I took was in the year 2000, when I was freshly home from au pairing in Europe and just accepted to a government-funded internship program at my alma-mater, Medicine Hat College. The internship had me working with international students from Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Mexico, placing them with host families and providing student services such as assistance opening a bank account and teaching new students how to use the transportation system in the rural Alberta city of Medicine Hat.

That very internship took me to Asia for the first time ever, long before I knew anything about photography or even had a passion for it. I intrigued myself when I rediscovered the pictures I’d taken in Taipei and Tokyo on that trip more than 11 years ago. I’ve been back to both places countless times since, but will always fondly remember this time in my life as the start of something very good.

Welcome to Shanghai!

I spent the last few days in Shanghai, China for the International Association of Language Centres (IALC) Workshop. It was a very busy and very festive few days in China with a warm welcome from the hosting school, Mandarin House. I was particularly taken by the traditional Chinese Lion Dance; I love the heavy drumming and the happy dancing of the lions!

The video might seem a bit long and I’m no videographer so bear with me; it does get a little more interesting around the 3:05 mark. I hope that you can catch the same enthusiasm that I did being there!

Happy Diwali & My Favourite Indian Eateries

UPDATE APRIL 28, 2012
I’m currently living in Bari, Italy and am very happy to find & recommend another Indian eatery.  Everything I need to satisfy my curry craving is found at Rajni Sonkar- Ristorante Indiano.  This will certainly tide me over for the next 6 months!

In honour of Diwali and my true love of Indian food, I’ve decided to share a list of my favourite Indian restaurants in world. Dishes like palak paneer, aloo gobi, mutton masala & samosas are like comfort food to me and no matter where I travel to, I can always find genuine Indian hospitality and a good chef!

I had some excellent food pics to share with this blog post but lost them when my iphone was stolen in Rio de Janeiro recently; so you’ll have to make do with the links below and share your own photos sometime! (Lesson: sync everything, always!)

In no particular order, my favourite Indian restaurants are:

Moti (Tokyo)
Tandoor (Taipei)
Tandoor (Sao Paulo)
The Taj (Seoul)
Baba India (Seoul)
Mumtaz (Berlin)
Khan (Zurich)
Musafir (Istanbul)

I had a brief love affair with my neighbourhood Indian bistro, Heavenly Bites in North Burnaby, which sadly closed last year due to family illness. More recently I’ve been frequenting Simply Curries in Vancouver which proudly supplied the Olympics with samosas!

Happy Diwali & Bon Appetite!

I am Love. In Berlin.

I’ve just arrived in Berlin for the largest, most popular international education industry event of the year: The ICEF Berlin Workshop. While it’s a super-intensive event, I usually find time to snap a few pictures. I caught this one just around the corner from the Crowne Plaza hotel in the city centre.

I am love. In Berlin.

Copacabana & Christ the Redeemer

I took my trusty Brownie Hawkeye Flash with me to Rio de Janeiro this month. Armed with a roll of Fuji Pro 400H and the intention of exploring multiple exposures, I set off to see the Christ the Redeemer statue atop Corcovado mountain. As I was staying at a hotel in Copacabana, I had the opportunity to take 2 doubly exposed frames of the same scene: Cristo Redentor on Copacabana beach.

Rainbow Family Village: Taichung, Taiwan

A few months ago, I read a blog post by Steven Barringer on the Matador Network about Rainbow Family Village in Taichung, Taiwan. Making a mental note the next time I headed to Taiwan for business (which is usually twice a year), I was going to have to find this secret spot and take a few photographs. I was under the impression that not many Taiwanese knew about this place but when I arrived late in the afternoon on the Moon Festival holiday in September, there were many visitors taking pictures and chatting with the elderly man who painted the houses, streets and sidewalks in this petit community. The colours are vibrant and the illustrations hieroglyphic and occasionally ominous. You can see the complete set of images from my visit to Rainbow Family Village on my flickr page.
